This site is dedicated to the celebration of music of all styles from all eras. From the call of the Northern Wood Thrush, to huge polyphonic works, it all begins with a melody — an audio event with a beginning and an end.
Hi, I’m James Bartlett. I play piano, Hammond organ, guitar and electric bass. I also compose and arrange music in any style and for any combination of instruments and voices.
My band “Max and the Mirth Mavens” offers up American popular songs and show tunes from the 20’s to the 50’s. This ensemble works as a duo, trio or quartet.
If you don’t need to listen, hire me to play solo piano background music for your special event. Being a committed mouldy fig, I focus my repertoire on the same era and styles of the Mirth Mavens band.
When not engaged in secular musical activities, I play and arrange gospel songs. True to my old school leanings, I stick to material written before 1937. I like my hymns up-tempo in a Southern Gospel style. My specialty in church music, though, is supplying contemplative solo keyboard music for Communion services.
In the realm of composition, I offer my services as producer of soundtracks, incidental music, and full scores for stage, screen and television. Contact me and let’s discuss your project.
Check out the other pages on this site for examples of the things I like to hear and play. I’ve also included some excerpts of my original tunes.
